The 2017-18 season might’ve been a dud for the Islanders, who finished 11th in the Eastern Conference, but it did see the emergence of rookie Mathew Barzal as one of the most dynamic playmakers in the NHL. Barzal was having an above-average rookie season up until that matinee game, but his first career hat trick sent the 18-year-old center on his way to the Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie.
